The Northumberland Teacher Training programme, led by the Three Rivers Teaching School Hub, is designed for aspiring teachers and includes a variety of host schools, where trainees are valued and supported throughout their journey. We are passionate about delivering high-quality teacher training that fosters collaboration, professional growth, and a commitment to excellence.

Associate College with the National Institute of Teaching

We are excited to be an Associate College with the National Institute of Teaching from September 2026 working in partnership to deliver our ITT programme

Overview

In our schools, trainees feel valued and supported from day one, as each is paired with a carefully selected mentor who nurtures their development into outstanding practitioners. The Northumberland Teacher Training programme offers a comprehensive experience that combines educational theory with practical application, focusing on the National Curriculum. Passionate individuals will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to create engaging learning experiences for students of all abilities. With a hands-on approach, trainees immerse themselves in various aspects of teaching—such as lesson planning, behaviour management, assessment strategies, and pedagogical techniques—within our diverse network of host schools.


Our programme

  1. Our Courses

    We offer a variety of fee paying courses, including the option to train full time (5 days per week) or part time (3 or 4 days per week) to offer flexibility to meet your needs.

    Primary:

    • Primary 3-7
    • Primary 5-11
    • Primary with maths specialism 3-7
    • Primary with maths specialism 5-11


    Secondary:

    We offer a range of secondary subjects including:

    • Art
    • Drama
    • History
    • Music
    • RE

  2. Training

    In the Northumberland Teacher Training programme, trainees will spend the majority of their time in a school environment from day one, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the classroom. This practical approach enables you to learn about lesson planning, behaviour management, assessment, and pedagogy while receiving subject-specific training from our team of specialists. Training sessions are held either at our hub offices at Esh Plaza, Great Park, Gosforth, or across our partner schools throughout the region predominantly on a Thursday. 

  3. Partner schools

    As part of the Northumberland Teacher Training programme, you will be placed in one of our partner schools across Northumberland, Newcastle, or North Tyneside for the majority of your training year. Additionally, you will complete a placement in a contrasting school within our network. While we will consider your travel arrangements, training in two different school environments is essential and may require some travel. 

  4. National Institute of Teaching

    We are excited to be working as an Associate College with the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) from September 2026. The Teacher Training Programme at NIoT embraces various routes into the teaching profession. This innovative programme offers different pathways, including fee-paying, salaried, and the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship, accommodating various learning styles and commitments, fostering a rich and inclusive environment for aspiring teachers. The NIoT’s Initial Teacher Training is a fully immersive school-centred programme – aspiring teachers will be in the classroom from the very start.
